What happened, and what's next? The United States of America's team may have lost to Ghana, but how did they perform throughout the World Cup?

The current Football World Cup, being played in South Africa, began on June 11, 2010, and it is due to end on July 11, 2010. The team from the United States of America was ultimately knocked out on June 26, 2010, but the USA team progressed further in the FIFA World Cup than it has since the year the tournament began.

FIFA World Cup History

The international tournament in football, known as soccer throughout the United States, has been held every four years since 1930.

United States Men’s National Soccer Team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The United States soccer team played its first match against its former mother-country, England, and the match ended in a draw of 1-1. England and her former colony only met once before on a FIFA World Cup playing field. On that occasion, in 1950, the United States defeated England with a score of 1-0.

In 2010, the United States next played Slovenia. This match also ended in a draw, and the final score was 2-2.

In their third match of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, the United States played Algeria, and won the match with a final score of 1-0. This win also meant that the United States won Group C. This was the first time the United States won its team group in the World Cup since 1930.

Sadly, the team from the United States experienced a reversal of fortunes in their next match.

2010 World Cup - USA vs. Ghana

With both teams putting up a good fight, Ghana ultimately won the match, and thus, the United States team was eliminated from the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The USA team had also lost to the team from Ghana in the previous FIFA World Cup in 2006.

The growing popularity of soccer in the United States caused many Americans to hope that the team from the USA would progress further in this World Cup. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and USA fans watching the World Cup must now look four years into the future for their country’s next chance at the World Cup.

What’s next for the teams of Group C at the 2010 FIFA World Cup?

England, the runner-up team of Group C, is scheduled to face the team from Germany on Sunday June 27, 2010.

The last World Cup won by England was in 1966, when England hosted the tournament. The final match of the 1966 FIFA World Cup was played between England and West Germany, and England won 4-2.

England frequently reaches the quarterfinals, but English football fans are still waiting for their team to again take home the trophy.
